What a scroll map is

A scroll map is a visual report that shows how far down a web page your visitors scroll before they stop. Somewhere on that gradient is the average fold — the point half your visitors never scroll past. A move or hover map tracks cursor movement as a rough proxy for where eyes go on desktop. An attention or area map estimates how long each region stays in view, blending scroll depth with time. A scroll map is narrower than all of these: it measures vertical reach only, not clicks, not cursor paths, not dwell time. That focus is its strength. Compare scroll maps across devices, because phones and wide monitors produce very different depth patterns, and a design that reads well on a laptop can bury everything on mobile. Gather enough sessions before you trust the picture — a handful of visits is noise. And pair the scroll map with a click map and your conversion data, so you learn not only how far people scroll but what they do when they get there.

The traps are subtle. A sharp color break is not automatically a problem: a well-designed page can deliver its point early and let the rest taper off by design, so a fast fade near the bottom may be fine. Reading the map without segmenting by device or traffic source blurs very different behaviors into one misleading average. And a scroll map cannot tell you why people stop — whether they found what they needed, got bored, or hit a confusing section — so it should prompt questions, not settle them.
