**Sources & attribution.** ASO methodology developed by AppTweak, Sensor Tower, MobileAction, data.ai, and others over a decade. Apple SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit specifications are publicly documented. MMP categories (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Kochava, Singular) operate openly. RGM adds operator-side patterns.

## What ASO actually is

App Store Optimization is the discipline of getting more downloads from app store search and discovery surfaces. It's SEO for the App Store and Google Play. The mechanics are different from web SEO but the strategic shape is similar: keyword research, on-page optimization, conversion rate optimization, and ongoing iteration.

ASO matters because the app stores are the dominant discovery surface for mobile-first products. Apple reports that 65%+ of app downloads come from search inside the App Store. Google Play sees similar patterns. If your app doesn't rank for the queries your buyers use, you're invisible.

### Keyword research

App store keyword research uses different tools than web SEO. The dominant tools are AppTweak, Sensor Tower, MobileAction, and data.ai. Each gives keyword volume estimates, competitive difficulty, and ranking data for both iOS and Google Play.

Apple's App Store and Google Play treat keywords differently. iOS uses a hidden 100-character keywords field plus the app name and subtitle. Google Play scans the title, short description, and long description for keyword signals. Strategy diverges by platform.

### On-page optimization

- **App name.** The single most-weighted field on both platforms. 30 character limit on iOS.
- **Subtitle (iOS) / Short description (Google Play).** Second-most weighted. Make it benefit-led.
- **Keywords field (iOS).** 100 characters. No spaces. No repetition of words from the app name.
- **Long description (Google Play).** Heavily weighted for indexing. Write naturally, not stuffed.
- **Screenshots.** Drive 50%+ of conversion variance. The first 3 matter most.
- **Preview video.** Can lift conversion 20-35% when done well.
- **Icon.** A/B test it. Small changes drive measurable conversion lift.

### Iteration

ASO is not set-and-forget. App stores re-rank frequently. Competitors update their listings. You should run a creative refresh cadence: new screenshots every 4-6 weeks for high-stakes apps, every quarter for steady-state.

## Mobile measurement

iOS App Tracking Transparency (ATT) shipped in April 2021 and broke pre-existing attribution patterns. Today, attribution on iOS runs through SKAdNetwork (Apple's privacy-preserving framework) and AdAttributionKit (the 2024 successor with more flexibility).

Mobile Measurement Partners (MMPs) like AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Kochava, and Singular sit between your ad networks and your app to attribute installs to the campaigns that drove them. Each MMP has trade-offs in price, integration coverage, and analytics depth.

## Common ASO failure modes

Stuffing the keywords field with high-volume but irrelevant terms — drives traffic that doesn't convert and hurts ranking long-term. Translating the listing without testing — what works in English often doesn't translate. Ignoring screenshots — the highest-leverage CRO surface in mobile. Treating iOS and Google Play as identical — they aren't.

## How RGM operates ASO

Our ASO engagements start with keyword discovery and competitive analysis using AppTweak or Sensor Tower. We build a keyword strategy that maps to your buyer's actual search behavior, not just high-volume head terms. Then we iterate on creative (screenshots, video, icon) on a monthly cadence with data feeding back from each iteration.
